Candy Crush Saga: Download the newest match-3 craze on Android, iPhone and iPad
If you enjoy match-3 arcade games, I’m sure you have already heard about the latest craze from your friends, if you haven’t played it already. Candy Crush Saga, the game that started out as a Facebook app, has now evolved to a full-blown app for both Android and iDevices!
With over 5,000,000 downloads, this app has certainly remained one of the most popular games on both Google Play and the iTunes App Store. Here’s why.
It’s all about candies!
As a match-3 game, the rules of Candy Crush Saga are easy enough to follow, but the additional twists thought up by its developer (King.com) make each level unique and challenging.
In this game, you match at least 3 “candies” of the same color by switching two candies to form a straight row. If you match more candies at once, you get candies with special powers.
Four candies matched result to a “striped” candy that wipes an entire row or column of candies when matched. If you make an L-shaped match (3 candies vertical and 3 horizontal), you get a “wrapped” candy that explodes all the candies surrounding it twice. And matching 5 candies in a row gives you the special color bomb candy, which wipes out an entire color of candies off the board if you switch it.
Mesmerizing graphics, challenging play
I’ve never been a fan of match-3 games, since I find the gameplay too boring for words. You do the same thing repeatedly, and the magic wears off. This, however, is not the case for Candy Crush Saga.
The gameplay may seem simple, but the graphics are so beautifully rendered, so colorful, that you find yourself mesmerized just to switch another candy on the board.
Plus, there are other candy types you discover every time you unlock a new episode, which just makes you want to finish this episode and move on to the next. Examples include the “jellies” you need to clear and the annoying “chocolates” which morph your candies.
The wide variety of game types and goals within this match-3 game has brought an all-new meaning to the genre. I can no longer claim that I do not enjoy match-3 games because of this app.
Pay-to-win, or go social
I have been playing Candy Crush Saga for months, but I still haven’t managed to beat all the levels. It started out with a whopping 360 levels, but now has 395 levels in total—and I’ve always found myself stuck in one level or another (right now I am at level 391).
This game is free to download and play, but it has in-app purchases: extra moves, special power candies like donuts, lollipops and chattery teeth. Plus, it only has a certain number of levels unlocked initially. To unlock other episodes, you will either have to pay your way per episode, or ask three Facebook friends to send you a ticket.
For non-paying players, you have only a maximum of 5 lives, which regenerate every 30 minutes (unless you ask your friends for a life), thus making it impossible to finish the game in one sitting. You need to really be patient while playing—or have lots of friends playing the game as well!
This, perhaps, is another winning design of this game: it has become a social game for people who refuse to pay real money to finish it. You compete with your friends on leaderboards, and you rely on them to help you by sending lives, power-ups, and unlocking the next episode.
The most annoying part of being a non-paying player is the fact that you need to win especially difficult rounds without power-ups. You can get stuck for days, weeks, or get so annoyed that you want to give up the game altogether and uninstall it from your device.
Winning a round needs both luck (in the candies on board) and strategy. You can check out the rest of this website for tips, walkthroughs and strategy guides for all levels of Candy Crush Saga.
